About the department

Translational Science is a department in Global Diabetes, Cardio-renal and Translational research, Novo Nordisk A/S. As part of Novo Nordisk’s new strategy within chronic diseases, this department has a focus towards all translational aspects from human target validation to biomarker identification and precision medicine hypothesis generation in support of new treatments within Diabetes, Obesity, Cardiorenal (CR) & Liver Disease (LD) areas. Currently, the department consists of 10 employees dedicated to conceive, characterise and apply translational research integrating biomarker identification and patient stratification needs into each single experimental project.

Our commitment is to build a presence within diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, kidney and liver disease research and to build a pipeline of differentiated candidate drugs in diabetes, obesity, heart failure, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

The position

The Bioassay Specialist will play a critical role in supporting the execution of Translational Science strategies through scientific and strong technical oversight of internal stakeholders and external CROs involved in setup, prototyping, development and qualification of biomarker assays to be further used in clinical trials. A key element of this position is to have deep technical expertise and broad knowledge in common platforms of bioanalytical assays (i.e. immunoassays or spectroscopy-based bioassays), as well as cutting-edge technologies in the life science research, critical to drive a successful world-class biomarker and precision medicine strategy for novel therapeutic targets at Novo Nordisk.

You will be working in a matrix organization and across multiple projects in the portfolio. A successful execution and timely implementation of the technical aspects of the biomarker strategy requires a close collaboration with Biomarker Experts and Specialists in the assay technology areas of the Novo Nordisk. In addition, you will be working with technical scientists in the Translational Science to characterize, evaluate and optimize biomarker assays for use as research tools and for further validation for clinical use. Most importantly, through a close collaboration with internal stakeholders, you will be responsible for a seamless and timely implementation of biomarker assays to clinical studies for novel therapeutic targets at Novo Nordisk

Qualifications

PhD in Biochemistry or Bioanalytical chemistry and have at least 5 years of experience with bioassay development. or MS degree in equivalent areas and have at least 7 to 10 years of experience in the bioassay development, qualification and validation. In addition, you have versatile technological knowledge, hands-on experience and track record demonstrating experience within assay development. Broad knowledge and experience with a wide variety of technologies used for the quantitative and qualitative biomarker assessments in biological fluids is preferred. In addition, it is an asset if you have experience from metabolic disease areas i.e. cardiovascular disease, obesity, type II diabetes mellitus, obesity, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis from biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

We are looking for a candidate with these qualifications:

  • Ability to efficiently search and evaluate commercial options for biomarker assays according to project needs.
  • Deep technical expertise and knowledge in common bioassay platforms (i.e. immunoassays, spectroscopy-based bioassays) and cutting-edge technologies (i.e. circulating nucleosomes).
  • Successfully leading technical team on the biomarker assay development using commercial and in-house assays with respect to performance, such as reproducibility, LLoQ, specificity etc.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot for assay optimization, characterization and validation.
  • Ability to write and oversee protocol development – ensure consistency between studies and literature.
  • Design experiments and select relevant sources of sampling. Ensure sample procurement.
  • Perform necessary calculations of biomarker characterization and qualification data, including normalization and correlations – with statistical evaluations. Data analysis and presentations.
  • Provide technical and operational expertise to stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality biomarker assays for data generation throughout project life including in clinical trials.
  • Function as the main point of contact with external CRO laboratories, as well as with internal stakeholders, ensuring development of assay plans, transfer of assays, assay validation, sample analysis, data transfer and quality.
  • Interact and coordinate together with project and clinical teams for appropriate sample handling in the biomarker studies.
  • Manage multiple projects and cross-functional tasks including distribution of work between laboratory technicians and research associates, including protocol development and optimization.
