Århus N

The Department of Biological Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University, invites applicants for a two-year postdoc position within the field of power-to-X concerning the conversion of CO2 to methane.

The deadline for the application will be 1st of September, 2021. The position is available from 1st of November 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

The Research Project
You will be part of the research project “APPLAUSE - Stable green power supply through dynamic coupling of bioenergy to renewable electricity”, a large-scale collaboration between tech-giant Apple Inc. and Aarhus University.
The project aims at developing knowledge and technology for decreasing the global dependence of fossil-based fuels and enable on-demand power generation in a fossil-free context.

You will be using your expertise in engineering (biological, chemical or mechanical) for the development of power-to-gas technology for producing CO2-neutral synthetic natural gas (BioSNG) from renewable energy and CO2 waste gas.
Your tasks will be to operate gas-phase reactors at pilot-scale, and analyze the resulting data to optimize the performance of the reactors. The process uses microbial catalysts (methanogens) for the conversion of H2 and CO2 to CH4 and the reactor has been designed to tackle the rate-limiting step of H2 gas-liquid mass transfer. A background within microbial catalysis, gas-liquid mass transfer principles and process engineering is therefore an advantage.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in biological, chemical or mechanical engineering. The ideal applicant has expertize or hands-on experience with:
  • Handling of reactor setups (lab- or pilot-scale)
  • Operation and maintenance of control systems and sensors
  • Biomethanation reactors, or other types of bioreactors
  • Gas-liquid mass transfer concepts
  • Gas chromatography
  • Excellence in both written and spoken English

You will be working as part of the research group “Microbial Conversion Technologies” and you are therefore expected to be a team player. As a group member you will be expected to contribute to student co-supervision, teaching and day-to-day work of the group.
The place of work is Hangøvej 2, 8200 Aarhus N, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

For further information please contact: Project Director Michael Vedel Wegener Kofoed [email protected].

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference
If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
