Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Gut Microbial Metabolomics commencing 01.06.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The position is available in the Section for Preventive and Clinical Nutrition in a scientific environment with dedicated colleagues and an international atmosphere. The section conducts research to reduce health risks by specific foods and diets. The exposure to foods and their effects are studied in cohorts, by human dietary intervention studies, and by several lines of advanced sample analyses including cutting-edge metabolomics and microbiomics.

Project description
The current position is part of a project called PRIMA - towards Personalized dietary Recommendations based on the Interaction between diet, Microbiome and Abiotic conditions in the gut supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The PhD student will conduct and drive a human intervention study with the aim of investigating interactions between abiotic factors, diet and the gut microbiota. The PhD student will perform metabolomics analyses on samples from in vitro, in vivo and human intervention studies conducted within PRIMA, and take part in combining multi-omics data using multivariate statistics. Since the successful applicant will be involved in writing the application for ethical approval and will be in contact with Danish speaking volunteers it is important that applicants have excellent command of the Danish or a related Nordic language.

Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Take part in activities and teaching at the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics or related field with excellent results and good communication skills in English. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience. A strong interest in the fields of metabolomics, microbiome, nutrition, mass spectrometry and data analysis is desired.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting annual salary is currently at a minimum DKK 328.355 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,360). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
