We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher who will join the LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center (SIC) as a postdoc for a full time position in two years to commence on 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointee is expected to develop novel ex vivo human skin models for members and associated partners of SIC and to conduct research within the areas of basic and translational skin immunology and T cell lymphoma.

Information about SIC can be found at: https://sic.ku.dk.

Our research
Our vision is to better understand, prevent and treat skin diseases for the benefit of the individual patient. Our goal is to discover novel molecular disease targets, innovative therapies, and ways to modify the immune system to fight disease. In particular, we strive to unravel how disturbances in the immune defense lead to chronic inflammatory skin diseases and cancer. Our mission is that SIC will become a world-leading Center for research and education in skin and skin diseases.

We perform basic and translational research in a close collaboration with clinicians at dermatology departments in Denmark, EU, and the US. We take an interdisciplinary approach to science and are collaborating with a large national and international network of researchers in areas such as immunology, microbiology, pharmacy, bioinformatics, cancer biology, veterinary and clinical medicine. We believe in teamwork and have an inclusive and supportive working environment in an international, open-minded atmosphere with a diversity of nationalities among group members and at the Department at large.

Your job
Our primary interests are chronic skin inflammation and cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL), which is characterized by the presence of malignant T cells in chronically inflamed skin. We focus on inflammatory skin responses, cytokine signaling, cellular heterogeneity at the single cell level, crosstalk between immune cells from healthy individuals, patients with chronic inflammation and CTCL, and the role of bacterial products, metabolites, allergens, and toxic substances are modulating chronic inflammation and disease progression. Your tasks will be to develop novel ex vivo human skin models for research within the areas of basic and translational skin immunology and cancer. In parallel, you are expected to help disseminate knowledge and advice on the use of novel models and techniques among researchers at SIC and associated partners and to help standardize the use of such models in relation to shared SIC projects. These tasks involve tissue culture of primary cells and skin tissue explants, multi-parameter flow-cytometry and cell sorting, and analysis of large sets of data and well as functional studies in vitro and in vivo of malignant and non-malignant T cells.

The postdoc’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
  • Dissemination of knowhow on ex vivo skin culturing to other SIC members and partners
  • Research-based teaching
  • Sharing knowledge with society

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • A PhD in skin biology
  • Highly experienced in organotypic human skin models
  • Experience with histological examinations (IF, FISH etc.)
  • Experience from publishing in recognized international, peer reviewed journals
  • An active interest in keratinocyte differentiation and crosstalk with immune cells and cytokines
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience from working with ex vivo human skin and isolation/culturing primary cells
  • Experience from working with genetic engineering (CRISPR/Cas9) and RNA-interference
  • Experience from working with bacteria
  • You have experience from working with flow cytometry, immune cells, and apoptosis assays

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories on the 12th floor of the Mærsk Tower and access to state-of-the-art core facilities for flowcytometry, single cell sequencing, microscopy, animal facilities etc.

Terms of employment
