The Atmospheric research group (Team Atmosphere) in the section Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) invites applications for a research assistant position funded by a research collaboration project between the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and NBI.
The collaboration deals with improvement of the existing model DERMA (the Danish Emergency Response Model of the Atmosphere). DERMA is an operational dispersion model, which was first developed in 1994, and it has since then been further developed in several steps. DERMA uses driving meteorological data from operational weather forecast models used by DMI. DERMA is a Lagrangian dispersion model based on release of a large number of tracer parcels.
DERMA is used for a number of preparedness purposes, including operational preparedness for dispersion from accidental nuclear releases and catastrophic chemical emissions for which the Danish Emergency Management Agency (Beredskabsstyrelsen) is responsible, and for dispersion of volcanic ash for applications in civil and military aviation. It is also worth mentioning that DERMA is used by operational forecasters at DMI for calculation of three-dimensional trajectories.
The new developments of DERMA will include new methods, which are needed when the horizontal resolution is refined to sub-kilometer scale. In particular, this regards parameterization of turbulent processes in the atmospheric planetary boundary layer (PBL).
Applicants should hold at least an MSc in geophysical fluid dynamical sciences. Experience with atmospheric modeling is an advantage, particularly in the fields of Lagrangian/semi-Lagrangian transport and diffusion algorithms, and in parameterization of turbulent mixing in the PBL. Furthermore, the applicant should have programming skills in modern Fortran and experience with Linux/Unix and preferably also Python.
The successful candidate will be based at PICE (p.t. Tagensvej 16, Copenhagen) but due to a very close collaboration with DMI, some of the working hours will be spent at DMI (nearby).
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 352.752 including annual supplement (+ 17.1 % pension) Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
The 24-month position will be open from May 1st 2020 with a potential possibility for extension, depending on the funding situation.
