Are you an early stage researcher searching for the opportunity to become a future leader in sustainability and policy research in energy systems? The UNEP DTU Partnership at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics invites applications for a 3-year Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) to be enrolled in our PhD programme at DTU.

The position is an Early Stage Researcher (ESR15) and Marie Curie PhD fellowship focused on Sustainability, Enabling Framework and Policy towards Increased Digitalization in Energy Sector. This is under the European Commission H2020 Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions, European Training Networks funded project entitled Innovative tools for Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (InnoCyPES) with Project ID: 956433 (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/956433). The consortium will recruit 15 Marie Curie Early-Stage Researchers working on relevant topics in this area. Working within a group of 15 talented early stage researchers and supervised by leading university faculty and industry experts, you will not only gain knowledge beyond the state of the art but also a vibrant network that could be invaluable for professional development.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Increased digitalization helps in effective control, observation and monitoring of energy systems, thus resulting in enhanced utilization and efficiency of the physical infrastructure. Expansion of highly digitalized energy infrastructure has not been considered in the past in system planning, due in part to challenges in quantifying its benefits and/or burdens, including associated environmental sustainability performance and carbon footprint.

This ESR research will investigate the environmental sustainability and carbon footprint associated with increased digitalization (and internet of things) of energy systems. The ESR will analyze different energy systems digitalization models, government policies at different levels (i.e. municipal and or national levels), institutional arrangements and key stakeholders' engagement analysis. The ESR will explore both top-down and bottom-up policy mechanisms. The research will undertake in-depth analysis of the role of Policy Dialogue Fora (PDF) as a mechanism for achieving better buy-in and the implementation of research findings by all relevant parties (i.e. governments, industry and society). The ESR will be responsible to develop sustainability metrics and to assess the sustainability performance and carbon footprint associated with fully digitalized energy systems. The ESR will be responsible to identify key barriers and opportunities from an environmental sustainability perspective, in a fully digitalized energy system. Finally (but not least), the ESR will develop a decision-support tool and policy roadmap for the sector to year 2030 (which is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target year, with a focus on SDG 7 - Energy and SDG 13 - Climate).

Your PhD project will result in scientific publications of the findings. You will participate in summer school and present at international conferences as part of your research training.

The secondment plan includes research stays at the following institutions i.e.: Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2 months); Électricité de France, France (2 months); NARI Technology, China (2 months); University of New South Wales, Australia (2 months); and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia (2 months).

Applicants shall have proven interest in interdisciplinary research and be able to work independently as well as in a team. Additionally, the requirements below are to be met i.e.:
  • Applicants must have a university degree that qualifies for PhD studies at the time of recruitment;
  • an excellent academic record (grades of B or higher);
  • have engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and/or interdisciplinary studies degrees with the following expertise (including but not limited to): LCA modelling/ Industrial Ecology and energy policy analysis. Experience in both quantitative and qualitative skills in social research methods will be an added advantage;
  • have good command of English (minimum C1 or equivalent);

The applicants must fulfill the following conditions:
  • Early-stage researchers: Applicants must be early-stage researchers, which means at the commencement date, the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • Mobility Rule: researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention1 are not taken into account. For international European interest organisations, international organisations, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) or an 'entity created under European Union law', recruited researchers must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date at the same appointing organisation.
