The translational pharmacology research group at Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine, University of Southern Denmark, is looking for a fully financed, full-time postdoctoral researcher with start April 1st, 2024, for two years or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over the recent years, we have built a research group comprising approximately 10 individuals with a background in pharmacy, medicine, and biomedicine. We are currently three PhD student’s, one postdoc, one laboratory technician, one MSc thesis student, one assistant professor and one professor in the group. We have a well-established cell laboratory working with human cell models (e.g., induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cells of the peripheral nervous system and 3D primary human hepatocytes).

Additionally, we have state-of-the-art LC-MS/MS facilities and automated immunofluorescent imaging facilities. We perform translational pharmacology by combining clinical studies in patients or healthy volunteers with mechanistic in vitro studies primarily in human cell-models. The group is led by Professor Tore Bjerregaard Stage. You will be part of a highly translational department that closely collaborates within register-based research and environmental medicine. There is a strong focus on career development at all career levels within the department.

Expectations of qualifications

We are looking for a postdoc for a project funded by an Independent Research Fund Denmark Sapere Aude grant. The project entails working with our state-of-the-art cell model of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived sensory neurons to identify novel molecular mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy utilizing CRISPRi/a screen. Approximately 12 months of the position will be at Ohio State University to perform initial experiments and learn to work with CRISPRi/a. There will be financial support for relocation to Columbus, Ohio. Your work will roughly comprise the following (can be adjusted according to your specific profile):

  • Differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into sensory neurons and Schwann cells.
  • Immunolabeling, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).
  • CRISPRi/a screen.

The successful candidate will be expected to have practical experience with in vitro models of drug toxicity or differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells, preferably into neuronal cells. The findings from this work will be confirmed in biopsies from patients of a concurrent clinical trial in cancer patients, allowing true translational (bench-to-bedside) research.

In terms of experience, we are looking for an individual with a PhD degree within pharmacology, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, or similar. It is more important to find a highly motivated individual than the exact previous experience of the candidate. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English is a requirement. The position includes independent scientific writing and supervision of students. You should be interested in contributing both to the scientific armamentarium in our department and to our collegial culture.

It will also be expected that the postdoc contributes to additional fundraising for the project and takes on teaching responsibilities within the department.

You will in your daily work refer to Professor Tore B. Stage, but also engage in a very active collaboration with the full research group.

Interviews can be performed online if needed. If you will need to relocate to Denmark for the position, both the University and the research group will provide ample support.

Additional information about the position can be obtained from Tore B. Stage at [email protected] (+4565503678).

  • A research plan describing your approach to the above project (maximum one page, excluding references).
  • A full CV including your education, a list of publications, awards, working experience, and contact details for 3 references.
  • Certificates/Diplomas (PhD, MSc and BSc combined as one single pdf-file) and academic transcripts (including grades) from your previous university studies, translated into English or Danish if the original documents have not been issued in any of these languages.
  • Copy of the (up to) 3 most relevant publications to the position.

Application deadline

January 14, 2024, 11:59pm (CET).
