We are seeking an experienced drug discovery scientist to help identify, validate, and mature new drug targets within peripheral mechanisms of obesity and insulin resistance with a focus on skeletal muscle. The position In this vital role, you will be responsible for identifying and maturing novel treatment options for Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and related comorbidities. As such, you will work with stakeholders across the organisation ranging from target ID campaigns to maturing new targets for portfolio entry and ultimately to move projects across the value chain. The role requires a profound understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms underlying peripheral mechanisms within obesity and/or peripheral insulin resistance along with keeping up to speed on new technological advancements. Key responsibilities will be:
  • Project execution with a focus on designing experiments in relevant human in vitro systems to explore MoAs and advance drug targets through the value chain
  • Taking an active part in the evaluation of external opportunities from academia, biotech, and pharma
  • Secure strong ties with relevant stakeholders across the organisation e.g., genetics, bioinformatics, and research chemistry
  • Qualifications You hold a Ph.D. in cellular or molecular biology (or similar) with a minimum of 8 years of post-graduate experience, part of which is drug discovery experience from pharma, biotech or similar. You have profound experience and in-depth knowledge of metabolism biology related to cardiometabolic disease, specifically within obesity and insulin resistance. The ideal candidate has:
  • Drug discovery experience from pharma or biotech and the ability/experience to move novel drug targets from concepts to established projects
  • Deep understanding of metabolism biology within cardiometabolic disease
  • Experience with functional human in vitro models of insulin resistance
  • Experience within skeletal muscle biology
  • Strong international scientific network
  • The ability to set scientific direction within area of expertise and influence stakeholders in a large matrix organisation
  • Collaborative, open-minded, positive attitude, team player, driven, and thriving in an innovative research environment are all key attributes of an ideal candidate. About the department The department is anchored in the Diabetes and Obesity research area within Global Drug Discovery (GDD), Novo Nordisk A/S. As part of Novo Nordisk’s strategy within chronic metabolic diseases, we are focusing on target identification, target validation and pre-clinical characterisation of new assets to become novel treatment options for people living with cardiometabolic diseases. In close collaboration with our colleagues across GDD, we are working in an organ-centric and disease agnostic manner to develop, characterise and utilise in vitro tools to elucidate mode-of-action and profiling of novel biology and molecules for early evaluation of drug candidates.
