Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is seeking a highly motivated, creative and independent PhD student to work on the development of innovative approaches for the production of valuable proteins in engineered yeast through synthetic biology. The successful candidate will join a vibrant international research environment and will be integrated at the “Biochemical Engineering” research group headed by Associate Professor Sotirios Kampranis ([email protected]) at the Section of Plant Biochemistry, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. The position is for 36 months. Starting date will be June 1st 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Directed evolution consists of a continuous cycle of diversification of a protein by natural or induced mutagenesis and selection of proteins with desired properties. It has been applied in creating novel enzymes but can be used for the engineering of any kind of proteins. Our main focus is to develop directed evolution methods in yeast, coupled with dynamic selection for engineering of high-value proteins. The incoming scientist will focus on setting up and applying a novel CRISPR CAS9 based universal yeast continuous mutation system and selection systems including our in-house biosensor platform and advanced protein-protein interaction screening methods for development of novel enzymes and other valuable proteins.

Skills and experience required or highly desired for the position:

  • Broad curiosity in biological questions and open-mindedness to cross-disciplinary research.
  • Knowledge of specialized metabolism with special focus on terpenoids
  • Theoretical and hands-on expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Enthusiasm and good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work and collaborate with others, including the supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students.
  • Ability to work independently and see projects through to completion.
