The Department of Management, Politics, and Philosophy at Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of organizational and management studies (cross-disciplinary sociology/anthropology/politics/political economy). Scholars from Copenhagen Business School, University of Copenhagen, and The Sino-Danish University Center are in the process of developing a major research project titled: Politics of Comparison: When Human Beings Compare. This PhD-project is a part of the subproject “When States compare and compete in Sport - Nations and systems of innovations competing in the world of table tennis”.
The PhD-candidate is expected to investigate why and how some national organizations (such as China, Germany, and Sweden) continue to innovate and produce a number of high performing table tennis players. China is totally dominating table tennis these years but during the last 30-40 years, Sweden has now and again been able to replace China as the world’s number one, in particular from 1989 to 2001. It is expected that the candidate will do a comparative study between China and another country (such as Sweden, Germany, Japan, Hungary or Korea). The research project is hosted at the Sino-Danish Centre in Beijing.

If you interested in applying for this scholarship you can ask for the Research Paper titled Politics of Comparison When Human Beings Compare. The paper provides information about the main project and various sub-projects. This PhD-scholarship is linked to one of the sub-projects. Send an email to Professor Lars Bo Kaspersen, [email protected] and you will receive the research proposal.

Applications are encouraged from those with some experience of organization studies and comparative political economy including the political economy of China. Chinese language ability is preferred, although not essential. The selection of the PhDstipend will not be based on prior methodological or theoretical preferences. However, applications should outline and reflect upon theoretical and methodological preferences. The holder of the scholarship will work within the field of organizational studies and comparative political economy broadly conceived and may choose to draw upon a selection among a range of related fields and approaches. These include, not exhaustively, sociology, organization studies, politics, anthropology and China studies.

Chinese citizens (includes Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) cannot apply for PhD scholarships funded by the Danish SDC office but must apply through University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in accordance with Chinese national regulations. Applications from all other nationalities can apply.
