København N
The Miller laboratory in the Center for Chromosome Stability (CCS) (www.ccs.ku.dk) at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM) (www.icmm.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, is seeking a postdoctoral research associate.
The CCS is a center of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The successful applicant will join a newly established group studying the molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic chromosome replication using cryo-electron microscopy.
Our group and research
The Miller laboratory aims to understand how eukaryotic genome stability is maintained during chromosome replication. In particular, we aim to determine the molecular mechanisms by which the replication machinery is able to overcome obstacles on eukaryotic chromosomes that might otherwise prevent replication fork progression.
As well as conventional molecular biology and biochemistry, we utilize time-resolved, high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) as described in the recent study of the replicative MCM helicase loading (Miller et al, Nature, 2019).
Start date: 1 October 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter
Duration: 2 years
Weekly working hours: 37
The Department
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine focuses on basic cellular and molecular biological processes, their regulation and their significance for cell function, interaction and organisation in tissues. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs spanning cell biology, genetics and basic human biology, including chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, as well as anatomy.
You can read more about the department at https://icmm.ku.dk/english/.
Responsibilities and tasks
The post-holder will biochemically reconstitute collisions between the yeast replication machinery and covalent DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) in vitro, which they will characterize biochemically and image by time-resolved cryo-EM.
The research will benefit from access to cutting-edge electron microscopy facilities at the Core Facility for Integrated Microscopy (CFIM) in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (https://www.cfim.ku.dk/) which houses Copenhagen’s node of the Danish Cryo-EM Facility. There will also be a research-based teaching in the ICMM curriculum, including at undergraduate level.
