The Danish National Museum wishes in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology at University of Copenhagen to examine how visual art and decoration has developed within the Danish Lutheran Church, ‘den danske folkekirke’, from the beginning of the twentieth century and up until today, where large sums are spend on ambitions decorations of the church interior.
Traditionally art and furnishings have supported the sermons preached from the pulpit and the ceremonies, but during the 1900’s a growing wish for a more contemporary furnishing and decoration of the church and its liturgy has become apparent.
Today contemporary art often aims at the activation of the whole of the church interior; from the explicit and literal to the subtle and abstract. The common ground is a tension between the new art, the historical architectural setting and the traditional iconography. In the middle of this encounter we find both the churchgoer as an individual and the congregation as a whole.
The project is to uncover the relations and hierarchies between church art, space and the personal spiritual and pastoral life of the 'den danske folkekirke'. The project is to be rooted in the disciplines of art history and church history and anchored in a large source material found from throughout Denmark.
The project is funded through Ny Carlsbergfondet.
Qualifications
Applicants must have an MA-degree within the fields of Art History, Theology or the equivalent. Research languages are Danish and English. Specialist knowledge of visual art, aesthetics and theology is important. Central is readiness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and work towards an integrated methodology for interdisciplinary studies in art and theology.
Job Description
The PhD-student will participate in meetings, teaching and scholarly workshops at both the Faculty and the Museum and be required to contribute to joint publications and publish research in international peer-reviewed journals where appropriate.

Institutions
The Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen. The Faculty is non-confessional and dates from 1479. Its research covers Biblical Studies, Church History and Systematic Theology as well as Quranic Studies and African Studies. The Faculty is home to a number of high-profile international interdisciplinary research projects. The Department of Church History has a strong and vivid tradition for research in Luther and Lutheran theology and in Christianity and the arts.
The Danish National Museum. The museum has a long tradition to research into church art and church architecture and employs a large number of specialists within this field, not in the least the corpus publication Danmarks Kirker, published since 1933. The museum also houses archival materials concerning church art and architecture reaching as far back as the seventeenth century.
Terms of employment
The successful PhD candidates will be offered a full-time PhD position for a period of three years. The candidates will be employed and paid in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

Recruitment process
After the application deadline the authorized recruitment manager select applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. This selection is based on the applicants’ educational qualifications, the quality of the submitted research proposal as well as other relevant qualifications. All applicants are immediately notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment.
The applications accepted for assessment will be assessed by an interdisciplinary committee, comprising expertise in the relevant fields of Theology (espec. Church History) and Art History. Selected applicants will be notified of the composition of the assessment committee. When the committee has completed its assessment, each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the assessment. A number of qualified candidates will be selected for a job interview. We aim to interview candidates in June 2020.
