Studiejob - Kongens Lyngby

An important tool in the green transition is biocatalysis, whereby enzyme-catalyzed reactions enable entirely new syntheses to a range of valuable products.

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (DTU Chemical Engineering) at the Technical University of Denmark offers a position as a PhD student in novel bioreactor configurations for gas-dependent biocatalytic reactions. This position will be hosted at DTU Chemical Engineering in a group which specializes is bioprocess scale-up and implementation. It will be part of an ERC Advanced Grant in the field of biocatalysis awarded to Professor John Woodley. This project will be integrated into the existing team. This PhD project aims to explore new bioreactor configurations to help overcome some of the challenges of enzymatic conversion using oxygen and other hydrophobic gases (including hydrogen, ammonia, carbon dioxide and methane). Laboratory and pilot experimentation will be used to help validate reactor concepts, complemented by models to help assess their potential.

Located in the Copenhagen area, one of the world's strongest biotech hubs, DTU offers a unique and internationally leading education and research environment with exceptional conditions for biotech career starters.

Project description
Biocatalytic oxidation is attracting enormous interest today in many parts of the chemical industry. Despite this interest, there remain several challenges for scale-up and implementation. In this project, the development of new equipment to facilitate hydrophobic gas-dependent reactions will be explored. Although biocatalytic oxidation using molecular oxygen will be at the center of this work, other gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide will also be evaluated. In this way, generic equipment will be established and benchmarked against stirred tanks, as a very valuable tool for those implementing such reactions in industry. Modelling tools and lab-scale experimentation will be complemented by pilot-scale experimentation (in the unique facilities at DTU Chemical Engineering).

Responsibilities and qualifications
As a PhD candidate working on this project you will:

  • Evaluate alternative bioreactor configurations for gas-dependent biocatalytic conversions
  • Develop lab-scale apparatus
  • Model the effects of kinetics and stability of the enzymes involved in gas-dependent biocatalysis
  • Predict scale-up effects
  • Test scale-up in the DTU Chemical Engineering pilot plant.

We are looking for a candidate with a solid background in:

  • Experimental bioprocess evaluation
  • Pilot scale operations for bioprocesses

Modelling and scale-up knowledge would be an added advantage.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof John Woodley and approved by an internal PhD assessment committee.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice.
