Fermentation Scientist to Biomason – Denmark

Then, you might be the one that Biomason needs for their newly established and highly specialized team to their manufacturing facilities in Ikast, Denmark.
Biomason is the only company in the world employing biology to produce cement commercially. Since 2012, they have used microorganisms to grow sustainable, structural biocement® in ambient temperatures, harnessing the power of biotechnology to reinvent traditional cement and offer a planet-friendly alternative. Biocement will eliminate 25% of the concrete industry’s global carbon emissions by 2030.
Biomason is ready to launch their production in collaboration with IBF in their manufacturing facilities in Ikast, Denmark. To support the start-up of production equipment, technical services, fermentation, and manufacturing, Biomason is looking to build a specialist team that will be the link between the pioneering knowledge in the US, and manufacturing in Denmark – and later in Europe.
To support the fermentation quality and oversee the biological processes through the whole value chain, we are looking for a Fermentation Scientist to manage and oversee the transfer of fermentation and biology.
Location will be in Ikast, Denmark, where Biomason has a manufacturing partner through their partnership with IBF.
Your role
As Fermentation Scientist, you will join the team at Biomason’s Biocement Operations Center and be responsible for fermentation process transfer and optimization. You will be a pillar in ensuring quality in a fast-paced environment and in supporting product development and product manufacturing within the European Technical Services Department. This position will report directly to a Technical Services Manager, who will also work out of Denmark. Your key tasks will include:
- Process transfer, and optimization of current fermentation procedures
- Drive quality manufacturing SOP documentation
- Work with automation teams to enable automated execution and performance monitoring
- Independently design experiments and troubleshoot when needed to enable rapid yield, cycle time and cost improvements
- Communicate manufacturing learnings to R&D to improve performance for next generation developments
- Collaborate closely with a scientific team located in North Carolina, to implement experimental plans and share results with colleagues by delivering technical reports
- Make incoming quality control of biological mass
- Follow all safety requirements and ensure the safety of others
Overall, you as a Fermentation Scientist oversee manufacturing associates in the operation of the equipment and preparation and storage of buffer solutions, ferment mediums, consumable material, etc. You can consider this a role, where you can navigate freely and greatly influence the future set-up and processes.
Your profile
We expect you to be an independent and self-motivating specialist, and with a demonstrated ability to quickly oversee, make and support scientific decisions, which you manage in an organized way and with attention to details. You can use your specialist knowledge to support others, and you do this with a collaborative and team-oriented approach. In your daily work, you present yourself as creative, proactive, persistent, and with a flexibility that enables you to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
In your work, you combine your distinct personal skills with following professional qualifications:
- Degree in microbiology, biology, or related discipline.
- Minimum a bachelor or master’s degree with 4 years’ experience or more from industry-based fermentation
- Relevant experience in Recovery, Centrifugation in continuous flow and standard mode, and experience in documentation of SOPs, batch records and work instructions
- Experience from data processing and with the operation and monitoring of fermentation equipment and centrifugation, as well as performing sterile techniques
- Experience with fermentation scale-up, and making a tech transfer from pilot stage to production scale
- Flexibility in travelling up to 20% (up to 40% in the 2nd year), doing site support for critical start-up and launch trials across Europe
