The Biochemical Genetic Laboratory at Department of Clinical Genetics, University Hospital Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet, has a full-time position open, for a biochemist, analytical chemist, engineer or like with experience (at Postdoc level) with High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) in omics-based platforms. The candidate will join our team of biochemists and medical doctors involved in biochemical diagnosis and monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM).
The Biochemical Genetic Laboratory is a centralized laboratory for diagnostics of IEMs in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The laboratory analyses more than 10.000 patient samples yearly, using of a panel of targeted analyses, e.g. amino acids, acylcarnitines or organic acids, which are based on a variety of different sample preparations and analytical techniques (MS, MS/MS, UV etc.). The laboratory wishes to implement a single platform metabolomics, using only one (or few) tests instead of multiple highly targeted tests for screening of the metabolome. Single platform metabolomics is slowly emerging in the genetic biochemical laboratories worldwide and have been named next-generation metabolic screening (NGMS). The aim of NGMS is to identify and measure as many (IEM relevant) metabolites as possible, in order to generate a diagnostic metabolic fingerprint from one patient sample.
Challenges:
The position represents a unique opportunity to work with real clinical data with direct implication for patient diagnostic and treatment. As a highly specialized laboratory, we have a unique position in the field of precision and personalized medicine following the patient from sample to bedside. The duties will be equally divided between routine operations and the work of establishing a NGMS platform in the laboratory. At present the laboratory does not have HRMS instruments but is in the process of applying for funding. The laboratory has ongoing collaborating with international and national centers running NGMS.
